Ex.1 (Phase 1) Design the initial stand

It is recommended that you keep the Help file open and alternate between the Help file and Excel to duplicate the various phases of the design and test of the crop plan. In the following instructions, the buttons shown in parentheses are for illustration only. You must use the MGM Toolbar in the MGM workbook when initiating an action with one of the buttons.

In these examples italic font is used to identify MGM objects, crop plan events, and other items of interest in the dialog windows and bold font signifies entries that should be made into the dialog.

  1. Click the MGM Toolbar Open button () to start a new crop plan.
  2. Click on the Untitled entry and press OK. When prompted, click OK to delete the existing Crop Plan. It should look something like:

  1. Right-click on the Crop Plans event to make it the active event (highlighted in yellow).
  2. Press the Edit button () to activate the Edit Crop Plans dialog.
    1. To specify a new crop plans identifier, replace Untitled with MGM Example 1.
    2. Press OK.
  3. Right-click on the Crop Plan event to make it the active event (highlighted in yellow). You can also click the Move Down to Next Crop Plan Event button () to activate the Crop Plan event.
  4. Press the Edit button () to activate the Edit Crop Plan dialog.
    1. To specify a crop plan identifier, replace Untitled with Help Ex. 1 - Crop Plan 1.
    2. Press OK.
  5. Click the Move Down to Next Crop Plan Event button () to activate the Options event.
  6. Click the Edit button ().
    1. If necessary click on the Alberta tab to identify the appropriate region.
    2. If necessary, click on the EcoRegion option button to identify the Sub-Region.
    3. Select the Central Mixedwood  sub-region from the alternatives presented in the drop-down box.
    4. Select the Merchantability tab,  set the (Min Dbh (cm) to 13.51 (15cm stump) Top Dib (cm) to 10, Stump height (m) to 0.3, Volume Loss (%) to 0)
    5. Select the Species tab, all species should be selected.
    6. Select the Other Setting tab, browse for the Stands Workbook by clicking the button, choose the MGM Stands.xls workbook. Note: this file take precedence over the file name set in the "Set workbook names" in the MGM tools dialogue.
    7. Select the Other Setting tab, MAFLAG (invoke stand breakup) should be checked.
    8. Click OK.
  7. Click the Move Down to Next Event button () to activate the Establish event.
  8. Click the Edit event button ().
    1. Click on the Trees (Stand age<= 25) tab to establish the trees.
    2. Set - Stand Settings
        Stand ID - AwSw
      Stand Wt - 1
      Stand Age - 14
      Year - 2000
      Random Seed - sets a starting random number if you choose, for our example it should read - 0.2905
      Note that the Randomize Seed button will allow you to set a different random number if you choose.
      By changing the seed, you change the initial heights and diameters of the tree list.
      Gap Area Loss % - 20
    3. AW Cohort - Set - Stand Origin and Site Index (This is done for each cohort being established)

    4. Create a tree list entry for aspen:
          Species -  Aw
      Av Density/ha - 3400
         
      Av Tree Age - 14
      Av Ht - 5.0
      stDev Ht - .9
      Max Ht - 5.9
      Av DBH - 3.3
    5.     stDev DBH - (leave blank) - these will be derived from your other inputs, should say 0.495
      Press the Add button in the Tree List Parameters box.
    6. Review Simulated Tree List Parameters:
      1. The tree list parameters next the New/Modified Entries button can be edited
      2. Replace the Av Ht with 4.4 
      3. Press the Replace button.
    7. SW Cohort - Set - Stand Origin and Site Index (This is done for each cohort being established)

    8. Create a tree list entry for aspen:
          Species -  Sw
      Av Density/ha - 1800
         
      Av Tree Age - 14
      Av Ht - 1.5
      stDev Ht - .6
      Max Ht - 2.4
      Av DBH - 1.7
        stDev DBH -  .255
      Press the Add button in the Tree List Parameters box.
    9. Press OK.
  9. Click the MGM Toolbar Save button() to save the Crop Plans worksheet into the MGM Crop Plans workbook. The Crop Plans worksheet is saved in the Crop Plans workbook using the CropPlansID setting as the worksheet name. If a worksheet with the same name exists, you are queried for permission to replace the existing worksheet.
